Fareham School of Gymnastics has just held another record-breaking event, with 162 gymnasts from the club competing in its annual Club Competition.
The event was split into two rounds, with 78 gymnasts competing in 6 teams of mixed ages and abilities. There was a repeat performance in the afternoon, with 84 competitors battling for a podium spot. The teams were cheered on by over 150 spectators as the gymnasts competed on Vault and trampette and performed a floor routine.
Many gymnasts as young as five, were competingfor the very first time and amid the applause were plenty of oohs and aah's as they negotiated the challenges of the Vault box and Trampette.
Before the medal presentations these gymnasts and their parents were treated to a short, but inspiring performance by members of the boy's competitive group and the girls squad.
In Round 1 medals were presented by George and Noreen Smart, who have been heavily involved with gymnastics in Fareham for well over thirty years. Lucy McFarlane, captain of the, Blue Team was singing the blues as she heard that music to her ears that they had topped the scoreboard. In addition to each member receiving a gold medal, Lucy accepted the Val Johnson Cup on the teams behalf.
Round 2 saw the Mayor and Mayoress of Fareham in attendance and it was the Green Team that scooped the top prize and most appropriately The Mayor's Cup, which was presented to the team captain, Isabel Cook.
In both Rounds gold medals were presented to the winners within each age group on each apparatus and gold, silver and bronze to the top three gymnasts in each age group across all three pieces of apparatus.
There was a tremendous atmosphere throughout the day, where the emphasis on participation and enjoyment was paramount.
